PES 2010: Review Empty PES 2010: Review

Gamesmaster Magazine review of PES 2010

Half a decade ago, FIFA was seen as little more than a PES clone with a few fiddly gimmicks attached. Fast forward to 2009 - or 2010, as the boxes have it - and it becomes apparent that it's now Konami who are left standing, like a statue-esque defence feebly protesting offside.

Everything about PES 2010 screams 'Just like FIFA!', from the indie-beat soundtrack to the 'Become A Legend (Not Pro)' mode, sideways camera and all. That the pace has been toned down considerably from PES 2009's frenzied arcade goalfests only serves to highlight the similarities. It even has its own little gimmick - the Top Trump-alike 'Training Cards' which allow you to affect the behaviour of team-mates by activating commands peculiar to their talents - a nice enough touch, but it's only likely to appeal to those who take 45 minutes to set up their team before each match. FIFA doesn't need such gimmicks anymore.

Down The Line

Of course, it doesn't matter who comes up with what if the gameplay is up to scratch, but while Konami have yet to make a poor PES game (and don't break habit here), it pails to FIFA 10 in almost every category. The much heralded '360 control' still has its roots set firmly in analogue movement - at 16 angles instead of eight - and although much has been made of the newly improved AI - 'Teamvision 2.0', was it? - the opposition are still rather plankish, flooding their penalty box at any sign of danger, while your team-mates in the Become A Legend mode are destined to frustrate. On the plus side, goal scoring is one thing PES still does better - shots are meaty, easy to direct, and we scored many crackers.

We could spend all day moaning about PES 2010, but in isolation, it's important to remember that it's still a very good football game. But it has nothing on FIFA 10, and let's be honest - is there really anyone out there who needs another version of PES?

-----------------------------------

Graphics - 88%
Excellent player likenesses - for the licensed teams, at least.

Gameplay - 83%
Seems rather one-dimensional, limited and last gen by today's standards.

Lifespan - 87%
Lots to sink your teeth into. Master League is as compulsive as ever.

Overall - 81%
Perfectly enjoyable - might be the best PES ever, in fact. But is that a bit of a hollow boast?

Anyone here getting this game? I probably won't. I'm happy with FIFA Smile

100% i prob will..

played the demo and its fucking great... a major step up from PES2009,

and if i am gonna be honest i think this one it actually better then Fifa10.

Fifa10 for me is like childs play... pinging the ball around from player to player with ease... shooting from the halfway line and scoring and also the dopey keepers makin silly saves and feeding the ball into the stikers feet.

with all that said i still think Fifa10 is a good game and a laugh and I WILL continue to play it.

PES2010 for me (from only playing the demo) screams pure class... it takes TEAM WORK to win a game in PES not ping pong passes or 1man teams. for me this game is the next best thing you'll get to the actually REAL football we all watch and love. not to mention PES have the licence to the Champions League which is now combined with the Master League.
one major draw back as ever is NOT having the licence for all the teams BUT with a little time spent you can download and install all the original kits in no time.

both great football game.

FIFA2010: good for showing off and scoring wonder goals with players like John Terry... lol. (which will NEVER happen for real)

PES2010: invite your mates round get the beers in a spend the whole Saturday night fighting to be the Champions of all in the Champions League.

just my opinions.

Very Happy

I used to be a pes fanboy but then changed once i played fif09. Im getting pes today to try out as the master league is far superior than the manager mode in fifa. Ill let you know what my thoughts are.

Pes 09 only lasted about 2 days with me before i traded it in so lets see how long pes 2010 lasts?

I used to absolutely LOVE doing Master League, i enjoyed how hard it was, yet it was possible, For some reason on Fifa, i find myself constantly unsatisifed, I still find the gameplay way to predictable on Fifa, and im getting sick of it.

PES on the other hand looks exactly the same as last year? i may be wrong as i've only played the Demo's.

Maybe its time for another Producer to bring out a Football game and rape them both.
